It's not a big step from blenders to green household gifts. For small gifts appropriate to renters as well as owners, there are always CFLs or hook up the new couple with a home efficiency audit.

For homeowners there are many larger gifts, such as a home energy and insulation audit and perhaps gifting the insulation. Since green gifts often take more thought and research, another approach for low-budget friends might be to form up for a group gift, where one person's contribution is research. If you're the couple, consider putting a few free but useful gifts on the registry: replace our lightbulbs with CFLs, find the greenest washer that will fit in our closet.

Cheap: In some cities (Oakland, Marin and probably many more) there are free home energy audits done by teen work programs, with no income requirements. Schedule one for half-friends you don't want to spend money on!

Mixed Message / Gag Gift: A low flow toilet with a sink on top is the perfect useful but somehow passive aggressive gift from a group of friends losing their buddy or to celebrate the marriage of your ex.
